First released by MOCA in 1995, Catherine Opie’s Dyke Deck features highly stylized portraits of the artist’s queer community—both friends and strangers, including participants from an open call in San Francisco. Each suit represents a facet of identity and connection: Couples are Hearts, Jocks are Clubs, Femmes are Diamonds, and Butches are Spades.
The Reshuffle Edition revisits Catherine Opie’s groundbreaking Dyke Deck with 26 alternate images from the original 1995 photoshoot, offering new insight into the artist’s vibrant portrait series. These never-before-seen portraits extend Opie’s exploration of queer visibility, intimacy, and performance.
Printed with gold-foil on black, the Reshuffle Edition reimagines the visual and emotional impact of the original deck. It includes a two-sided insert with Adriene Jenik’s custom “Poke-Her” games and a reproduction of the original call for participants, connecting this new edition to its radical beginnings in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
