Sam Durant
By Michael Darling and Rita Kersting. Contributions by Michael Darling, Rita Kersting, Kevin Young.
This catalogue accompanied the exhibition Sam Durant, MOCA, Los Angeles, October 13, 2002 – February 9, 2003.
The first survey of the work of Los Angeles-based artist Sam Durant, this catalogue selectively traces his development from 1992 to the present. Durant’s process begins with the identification of a theme that is subsequently explored through a variety of media—from sculpture to drawing, photography, video, and sound—culminating in a multi-faceted installation. His work is often driven by the conflicts that exist between differing value systems, classes, and cultures. With one foot in the realm of popular culture and the other in the academy, Durant forges commentaries on the conflicting ideals of a wide range of cultural pursuits.
