The images found in this notebook are sourced from British Fresh-Water Algae, a treatise in two volumes and 130 illustrations published in 1882-1884 by Williams and Norgate, a London house specializing in educational and scientific literature. Its author, Mordecai Cubitt Cooke (1825-1914) — Botanist, mycologist, teacher, curator, and journalist born in Norfolk — intended it for "Microscopists during their excursions wishing to learn more about the organisms encountered in ponds and ditches." It proposes a "practical" classification, and distinguishes between Chlorophyllophyceae (green algae), Phycochromophyceae (blue-green algae), Melanophyceae (brown or blackish algae), Rhodophyceae (pink and red algae) and Diatomophyceae (algae with a siliceous skeleton).
