The triptych features Parker playing the saxophone and Gillespie playing the trumpet, combined with blue brush strokes and Basquiat's signature repeated use of text. The word “Ornithology” featured throughout the composition references Parker’s 1946 jazz standard by the same name. The dynamic layering of text, figures, and color elicits the rhythm of the music, capturing the spontaneity of Parker and Gillespie’s playing.
